It was a rainy evening. The light turned green, and my black-coated dog, Kumo, bounced toward the crosswalk. Headlights flickered through the drizzle. Just as Kumo stepped forward, a thin reflective seam I’d stitched onto a test harness caught a driver’s beams—like a tiny signal. The car slowed. We crossed.
In that instant, I realized pets don’t just wear “something nice.” They wear our trust and safety.
Back home, I unpicked an old rain jacket and rebuilt the piece: soft bindings where collars often rub, sturdier hardware where clips can loosen, reflective placement where movement makes it most visible, and a skin-friendly, easy-care lining. Kumo zoomed around the living room—freer, comfier.
At the weekend market, a stranger pointed at the harness: “Where did you get that?” “You can’t—yet,” I said. “It’s a prototype.” That day brought our first custom requests.
